Non-Rebel With A Cause

Anyone that knows me well knows how strongly I feel about the issue of domestic violence. This year (thanks to the Diversity Committee at work) I found the Purple Laces Walk. Check out my team site. If you want to come and join us in the walk, let me know and you can join the team.

Couch Potato Team for Purple Laces Walk

Or if you want to donate, that would be awesome too.

The Safe Dating Challenge is coming up the end of October too. I'm taking bets now as to whether or not I'll be in shape for a 5K by then. Oh! And Dylan is doing the kids run this year! Yay Dylan!

What a Weekend!!!

It started Friday night with a marathon dance session. Ok, not marathon, but it felt like that to my poor feet who are all beat up and bleeding again because apparently my name should be Fertile Myrtle.

Actually, thinking about it, it started out Friday afternoon when we had to pick Dylan up early from school and bring him to the hospital for X-rays on his elbow (which turns out NOT to be broken, thank goodness).

Then Saturday we went to the Ren Faire with her and her. It was a lot of fun, but Ren Faire with a 2-year-old is a lot different than Ren Faire with lots and lots of Meade. It was very quiet this year without her, but still lots of fun. We played with some guys balls, and then bought some balls to bring home for to keep playing with balls. Dylan rode a pony. He wasn't too interested in the insult or chess match, and we didn't quite make it to the joust. Next year he might be more into the face painting and stuff like that. He loved his hat, and didn't want to take it off when we put it on.

Dylan at the Ren Faire

Saturday night/Sunday morning was fun. I think I got dehydrated because I felt like ass and was all pukey-pukey. Thank heaven for Powerade, because we had our nephew's 5th birthday party on Sunday. It was supposed to be mini-golf, but since it rained it got changed to bowling. That was actually lots of fun. Dylan had never been bowling before, but he got the hang of it after a while - sort of - and wanted to do it "all by myselss." I think he scored over 50, which is pretty good for a 2-year-old. Then we went back to my sister-in-law's house where he played with his cousins and we had pizza and ice cream cake. I think he had a lot of fun playing with his cousins and bossing them around.

I'll tell you though, weekends like that are exhausting. I need another weekend to recover from my weekend!

I think I'm going to join MENSA. Now all I have to do is track down my 15-year-old SAT scores. Apparently the Spring of 1993 is Prehistoric Times when it comes to the SAT testing people.

Word of the Day

I've decided that every day I will work a new and strange word into a sentence when talking to some unsuspecting coworker.

Today, it was "behooves."

That's right. I used "behooves" in a sentence. AND I did it with a straight face. Go me.

NaNoWriMo (or "What am I? CRAZY?)

I can't believe I'm even thinking about this...

Despite the 80-something degree heat wave - in frigging October - we are creeping up on the month of November. And do you know what that means? Yes, Thanksgiving and Pilgrims and hopefully cooler weather, but November is also the month of the NaNo - WriMo, that is.

Now, the last time I participated in the insanity that is NaNoWriMo (or rather, my alter ego participated, since I, Terri, never partook of the festivities, even though I have the T shirt and my name is on the list of people who donated money. But if you look at the list of winners in 2004 - wow, was it that long ago? - my name does not appear. But I digress...), where was I? Oh yes, the last time, this is what I sounded like halfway through (and this is a direct quote)...

I tried to tell my dog to go in the kitchen this morning. It came out "Atch ak intin."

I saw someone I knew on the way up the stairs at work and tried to say good morning and it came out "Ga Ma Ah."

I [...] staggered zombie-like over to my co-worker's cube. After she realized that "Yannah Caf" meant "Would you like to go downstairs with me and get coffee," we headed on down to the gourmet food place that is our cafeteria.

But yet, the crazy-ass muses are jabbering a mile a minute with all these ideas that I couldn't possibly find the time to type up. But still they drone on. Most of it is self-indulgent wish-fulfilment type crap, but there could be a decent story in there somewhere amid the fluff. The last story is still unfinished, even though I (or rather, my alter ego) posted the first chapter up at fictionpress. So do I do it? I could always give it a try and if I don't make the 50,000 words, oh well. Except, as I said to my boss's boss at our picnic when discussing the upcoming managers vs workerbees volleyball game, "I don't do losing."

So the dilemma du jour is, "To nano, or not to nano."

Beats the crap out of being...

Don't you know who I am?!? Don't you know who I'm with?!?

What a weekend!!! Huge family party on Saturday (at my house), balloon handling training Sunday morning and then big premiere Sunday night.

I will tell you, it's all about who you know. Or rather, who your cousin knows. Or actually, who your cousin's ex-wife married. We were standing outside the theater waiting to meet up with "Jim" - whose last name I did not know at this point - who was the one responsible for getting us tickets to the show. We told the women next to us that when Jim arrived, we were going to have to squeeze through the barrier right where they were to get in (because just telling the nice police officers that you're meeting "Jim" was not good enough for New York's Finest). The one girl asked me who we were waiting for, so I said, "Jim." And then she said, "Oh my God!!! You mean [insert Jim's full name here]." So I turned to my cousin and he nodded, so I was like, "Yeah." She proceeded to freak out.

Luckily then, Jim arrived and we were allowed past the barrier into the theater. I'll tell you, people who were giving you a hard time before are totally different when you are "with Jim."

We had great seats - third row center - and the show was great. After the show we made our way to the party. It was the first time that I met people I would consider celebrities. (Except, of course, random football players who carry my books to class and were very gracious even though I insulted their team and complained to them about how much of a pain it was to have the team there because I didn't recognize him out of uniform). But it's weird when you refer to a person by first and last name and then when they introduce themselves 1) you know who they are already and 2) they use only their first name. For example - and I refuse to name drop so I'll use Brad Pitt as an example because he wasn't there - if Brad Pitt were there he'd sit down at my table and extend his hand and say, "Hi, I'm Brad." And I'd shake his hand and say, "Hi, Brad, I'm Terri." And then we'd talk about random things like you would talk to anyone you'd just met, except every five minutes someone was coming over telling him how much they love his work and how big a fan they are and could they get a picture while Brad has a mouth full of salad. Seriously. Let the man eat.

No, Brad Pitt was not there, but that actually happened to someone I was sitting with. They could not get two mouthfulls eaten in a row. And the sad thing was this was at a premiere party where it was invite only. It must suck for these people to try and go out in public and lead normal lives.

So, we did take pictures with the cast, which was pretty cool. They were all very nice. Actually, everybody was very nice. And then there was much drinking and dancing and mingling and schmoozing and mistaking nice girls from Connecticut for movie stars (she was very flattered).

All in all a very fun time. Totally worth the nasty hangover in the morning.

I'm A Little Diva, Short and Stout

v. excited...

for those of you that don't know, i'm choreographer (and apparently assistant director) for a "broadway junior" show, which is a broadway show performed by all kids. the show itself is changed slightly to be a little shorter and more kid-friendly, and, like i said, the actors are all children between 11 and 16.

well, i have a new appreciation for not being cast in a show. the director and i finally (after hours of discussion and debate) cast the show, and i can't say much, obviously, but it is so hard to pick and choose who will play what part when you have so many terrific people to choose from who would all do wonderfully!

it has really changed my outlook.

i think i was slowly morphing into diva.

let's talk not about this show, but let's talk about the last show i was cast in. i was not cast as the lead i went out for, but in a supporting role. not ensemble, but a speaking/singing role. i was upset at first not getting the role i wanted, and wondered why i wasn't good enough. what did i need to improve? my voice? my acting?

i feel a lot better now about rejection. sometimes, there are so many great people, you just have to pick one, even if others would be equally good.

i have made my peace with not getting cast.

and now, i must go make my peace with calling my half of the list and listening to excited children scream my ear off.

Well, at least I went.

I had my audition last night for that show that's casting 3 women. Yeah.

Ok. So I made a promise to myself that no where in this entry would I degrade into a pity party for myself railing on about how much I suck. I will not do it, but don't believe for a minute that isn't what I'm thinking.

That being said, I will objectively recount the events of the audition. I got there and knew the stage manager. I was the ninth and last person to audition. One of the other people had a terrible voice, but the others were pretty good. When I finally got to go in, I knew the producer and the director extended his hand and told me he was glad to finally meet me. That was a trip.

Apparently, he had seen me in the last show I was in and told me I was "fabulous." Ego boosts are always good before you have to go on stage and be judged.

So there were several points in my favor. They also were looking for someone who could rollerskate, which I can. (I'm a little frightened about why a stage production needs roller skaters, but ok.)

Points against me are 1) [edited], 2) they didn't dance us, which is my saving grace usually, 3) i had a cigarette this weekend and everyone was right; one cigarette will screw up your voice.

Points for me are 1) i can rollerskate, 2) there were only 9 people (i don't know how many will go tonite, but even if it's the same, that's not bad odds), 3) i know the producer and stage manager, 4) the director saw me perform and i'm much better performing than auditioning.

Well, like I said, at least I went. We'll see what happens.

Three Women

There is this one show that was coming up that I knew I wanted to audition for. The audition notice finally came out and they're taking three women.

Three women!

It's a week from today and I really really want to be in this show, but I don't know. Three women? The last time I auditioned at this theater, i think there were something like 100 other people auditioning?

We shall see. Perhaps I will have even more time off...

Audition Situation

I need another show.

I don't know if it is because of the holidays coming up, or the way the planets are aligned or what, but the number of auditions right now are severly lacking. I have my two new audition pieces all shined up and ready to go, but now we're just cooling our heels.

All that's out there right now is straight plays. What business does a "dancer who sings" have in a straight play? I'll tell you. None. Zero. Zip.

Gaah...listen to me...complaining again. Sheesh. I annoy myself sometimes.

I guess I can look at the bright side...I can get all my Christmas shopping done this year without having to work around rehearsal and performances. And I can get all my choreography for my classes done on time this year... But I really wanted to have a show lined up before the end of the year.

Well, I guess I still have two months, right? Or at least a month and a half? Sigh. I was spoiled the last two times, I went from one show right into the next, right into the next. By the time one closed, I already knew when rehearsals for the next one started. I'm not really sure what to do with myself here.

Patience, I know...patience...
